Construction of the ISABIAL building is progressing steadily and will make it possible to allocate more than 6,000 m² to cutting‑edge research in the province

  • The space will feature a modern, functional, accessible and sustainable design, incorporating high‑energy‑efficiency solutions
  • The infrastructure will strengthen biomedical research, enhance scientific collaboration, and increase its impact on healthcare

Alicante (29.04.26). The Department of Health is making steady progress on the construction of the future building of the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), which will provide 6,141.91 square metres dedicated to cutting‑edge research in the province.

Following the start of construction on 20 March 2025, and with the building’s structure now completed, current work is focused on the execution of façades, subfloor bases, and sanitation and plumbing installations. This infrastructure represents a significant boost to the growth of biomedical research activity in the Valencian Community, with a direct impact on improving healthcare for the public.

The new building represents an investment of more than €13.3 million and has been designed as a functional, efficient infrastructure adapted to the needs of biomedical research. In addition, it incorporates a human-centered design that prioritizes universal accessibility, natural lighting, and visual connection with the outside in all its spaces.

Elena Bertomeu, Managing Director of ISABIAL, noted that “this project represents a decisive step forward for the institute, as it will provide us with a dedicated, modern space fully adapted to the real needs of our research staff, while also fostering collaboration between teams, attracting talent, and driving the development of projects with a greater impact on population health”.

The new research building is located within the Dr. Balmis University General Hospital complex and will expand the capacity of the health research centre to bring together the more than 150 management professionals who support ISABIAL’s over 600 researchers.

Synergies to improve healthcare delivery

For his part, the Managing Director of the Alicante‑Centro Interdepartmental Health Group (ASI), Francisco Soriano, highlighted that “this project strengthens the integration of healthcare and research activities within the same complex, generating synergies that will directly translate into better patient care”.

“The physical proximity between healthcare professionals and research staff will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the application of scientific advances to the clinical practice of the Health Department”, Soriano added.

Currently, ISABIAL’s research staff is distributed across several care areas within the hospital complex, and the commissioning of this new building will make it possible to bring together the 47 research groups and expand the space dedicated to scientific work.

In the coming months, the work will focus on the construction of the external façade, which will combine aluminum composite systems and external thermal insulation (ETICS), as well as on the installation of a distinctive pixelated skin that will define the building’s image, particularly on the façade facing Pintor Baeza Avenue, giving the building a modern and cutting‑edge exterior appearance.

Among its most notable architectural features is a main entrance articulated around a semi‑covered central courtyard integrated with landscaped areas, as well as a modern exterior envelope that will give the complex a distinctive identity.

The interior layout of the building has been designed in coordination with ISABIAL’s technical teams to foster multidisciplinary collaboration

Efficient and sustainable building

The future ISABIAL building will be a high‑performance infrastructure, both in terms of materials and energy efficiency. Its design incorporates solutions aimed at minimising energy consumption, such as a high‑performance thermal envelope, external insulation systems, high‑efficiency window frames and solar protection provided by the building’s outer skin.

The building will also incorporate high‑efficiency climate control systems, along with a rooftop photovoltaic plant for electricity generation. All of this will make it possible to achieve an A energy rating, reflecting its high level of energy efficiency and sustainability.

The completion of the construction works is scheduled for 2027, at which point the new building will strengthen ISABIAL’s research capacity and consolidate its role as a leading centre for cutting‑edge biomedical research in the Valencian Community.
