The Consell has put out to tender the construction works for the research building at Alicante’s Doctor Balmis General Hospital, with an investment of 14.3 million euros.

  • The space will be dedicated entirely to excellence in health and biomedical research, and the construction period is set at 24 months.
  • The building will be located on the site of the former garden of the healthcare complex, next to the entrance on Pintor Baeza Street in Alicante.
  • The building will become the headquarters of the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), which has more than 600 researchers distributed across 44 research groups.

The Regional Ministry of Health has launched the tender process for the construction of the new research building at Alicante’s Doctor Balmis University General Hospital. The facility will become the headquarters of the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL). The base tender budget includes an investment of 14.3 million euros, and once the works begin, the execution period will be 24 months.

The future building will be integrated into the surroundings of Alicante’s Doctor Balmis University General Hospital and will expand its capacity to bring together the 44 research groups across ISABIAL’s five areas. The health and biomedical research centre currently has more than 600 researchers distributed among its various groups, as well as a wide portfolio of research support platforms.

The new building will be constructed on the site previously occupied by the hospital garden and will have a total floor area of 6,194 square metres distributed across several levels. Currently, ISABIAL’s research staff is distributed across several care areas within the hospital, and the commissioning of this new building will make it possible to bring together the different research groups and expand the space dedicated to scientific work. In this way, the new facility will serve as a boost to the province of Alicante’s commitment to excellence in biomedical research.

The Generalitat is set to construct a modern three‑storey building that will house the management area, equipped with offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms, as well as a section dedicated to the data processing and communications centre. In addition, the teaching area will be located here, featuring classrooms and simulation spaces.

The new building will include a fully equipped laboratory area featuring a freezer room, a nitrogen‑tank room, and dedicated spaces for centrifugation and sequencing, among others.
In addition, the Clinical Trials Unit will include a waiting area, a Day Hospital–style room with beds, and a medical consultation space. The new building will also house the Research Support Laboratory and the Clinical Trials Unit, among other ISABIAL services.
