Platforms, Resources and Research Support Infrastructures

PLATFORMS

The Foundation responsible for managing ISABIAL provides robust scientific and technical support to researchers and companies, offering state‑of‑the‑art infrastructures and equipment. The Institute is structured into three key platforms, each with specific objectives that strengthen different areas of biomedical and health research: the Biobank and Biomodels Platform, the Scientific‑Technical Support Platform, and the Clinical Research Support Platform.

The Biobank and Biomodels Platforms provide essential resources such as the Biobank and the Joint Research Unit in Biomedical Design and Manufacturing (BioFAB), along with the Animal Models Unit for Liver and Intestinal Pathology. Together, they enable the collection, storage and analysis of biological samples, as well as the creation and study of animal models.

The Scientific‑Technical Support Platforms integrate ISABIAL support units such as the Research Laboratory (LAI), the Phase I Clinical Trials Unit (UECA), the Pharmacogenetics Unit, the Electron Microscopy Unit, and also include the Alicante Innovation Simulation Laboratory (SIMIA). This platform additionally comprises healthcare support services that provide assistance in areas such as Clinical and Genetic Analysis, Pathology, the Library, Epidemiology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, and the Integrated Diagnostic Unit for Haematological Neoplasms.

Finally, the Clinical Research Support Platforms include the SCReN unit (Spanish Clinical Research Network), which focuses on clinical research and ensures the support and management of advanced clinical studies.

This comprehensive structure ensures that ISABIAL continues to promote scientific excellence and foster innovation in health and biomedical research.

RESOURCES AND INFRASTRUCTURES

The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL) provides a wide range of resources and facilities to support researchers and professionals in their scientific work. These resources are organised into different groups according to their location, each offering state‑of‑the‑art infrastructures and equipment to meet the needs of various areas within biomedical and health research.

RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN THE ALICANTE–GENERAL HOSPITAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The ISABIAL Research Laboratory (LAI) is designed to provide an optimal environment for researchers, offering facilities equipped for advanced research in cellular and molecular biology. Its infrastructure includes specialised rooms for sequencing, PCR/qPCR, microscopy and cell culture. In addition, the LAI is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art sequencing technologies and has trained personnel who provide guidance and training in the use of this equipment.

The Library of the Dr. Balmis General University Hospital is a key centre for scientific information in the Health Sciences, accessible to staff of the Department and to university students. It provides the necessary resources to support healthcare, teaching and research activities.

The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL) has extensive scientific infrastructure within its LAI facilities, offering the resources and services required to carry out cutting‑edge, high‑quality research, which are made available to the R&D&I community. This infrastructure operates under an open, competitive‑access model. Most of the equipment is funded by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF). Below is a detailed list of the equipment, classified by category, along with the different service fees approved in 2022.

RESOURCES AVAILABLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE (UA) AND THE MIGUEL HERNÁNDEZ UNIVERSITY OF ELCHE (UMH)

The Animal Facility of the University of Alicante supports research involving animals, promoting their care and well‑being.

The UMH Animal Facility provides animal models and training for researchers, ensuring animal health and welfare in accordance with the principles of Reduction, Refinement and Replacement.
