Alicante (30 May 2022). The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), where researchers from the Alicante–General Hospital Health Department, the University of Alicante (UA) and Miguel Hernández University (UMH) work, opened its doors today, 30 May, to 2nd‑year secondary school students from Santa Teresa School and IES Jorge Juan in Alicante.
The students enjoyed and were awarded in the activity “Get on Your Skin!”, which is part of the European Mednight GTS project funded by the Horizon Europe programme (MSCA and Citizens 2022) (ref. project 101061179). In this project, various universities, research centers and science outreach institutions from the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia also participate through a consortium.
The activity “Get on Your Skin!” aims to bring research closer to society, especially young people, in a friendly, innovative, attractive and dynamic way. In addition, ISABIAL highlights the importance of fostering inclusive and balanced gender role models, as well as the need to spark scientific vocations.
“Get on Your Skin!” is an activity that has shown 2nd‑year secondary school students from Santa Teresa School and IES Jorge Juan the work carried out at ISABIAL, with the aim of stimulating vocations in the scientific field. Specifically, they visited the Clinical Simulation and Innovation Laboratory of Alicante (SimIA), the only simulation and virtual reality laboratory in a hospital setting in the province of Alicante; the Research Support Laboratory (LAI), equipped with state‑of‑the‑art technology to support research groups; and the Biobank, a service specializing in the management of human samples used in biomedical research.
During the visit, the students took part in a role‑exchange game and assumed the roles of staff working at ISABIAL.
In the next academic year, the Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research will once again open its doors to new groups of minors in order to encourage scientific vocations.
