Biomedical and healthcare research in the Valencian Community comes together for the first time in an event open to society
The event, organized by the La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe), brought together staff from the 7 research foundations attached to the Regional Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health
Alicante (28.04.23). The biomedical and healthcare research foundations of the Valencian Community met last Friday in the assembly hall of Hospital La Fe on the occasion of the I Meeting on Biomedical Research and Innovation in the Valencian Community. The aim of the event was to present the activity of healthcare research institutes and biomedical research centers and to share good practices and success stories in research management, innovation, and engagement with society.
The health research institutes La Fe (IIS La Fe), Hospital Clínico de Valencia (INCLIVA), and Alicante (ISABIAL), the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (FISABIO), the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the University Hospital of Valencia (FIHGUV), the Foundation of the Provincial Hospital of Castellón (FHPC), and the Príncipe Felipe Research Center (CIPF) are research centers linked to the Regional Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health.
These foundations produce most of the scientific publications in the healthcare sector of the Valencian Community and, when considering all scientific sectors, they rank second in scientific output after universities, being a central pillar of the research and innovation system of the Valencian Community.
Research, innovation and society
The event was structured into three sessions dedicated to research, innovation, and the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approach. From each research center, a project underway in each of these areas was presented. Innovation projects that have highlighted, according to the scientific director of IIS La Fe, Guillermo Sanz, who opened the meeting, the presence of biomedical research in the Valencian Community in major national and international initiatives, from medical imaging and artificial intelligence to personalized medicine and the mechanisms of muscle aging and frailty.
In the session on innovation and transfer, examples of translational and transformative research in the field of hospital medical research have been shared. Finally, in the block dedicated to Responsible Research and Innovation, various initiatives on citizen participation, open access, gender equality, scientific education, ethics and governance being developed by the research centers of the Valencian Community have been presented.
Conclusions
The conference concluded with a round table in which the management teams of the centers involved participated. Representatives of the foundations agreed on the need to continue working on a strategic roadmap for biomedical research that makes it possible to address new challenges aimed at the development of advanced therapies, more precise medicines supported by the use of data and artificial intelligence.
Reference was also made to the scenario opened up by the Science Law and the Biomedical Research Law in issues related to the working conditions of people working in research and innovation to address the scientific and social challenges related to biomedical and healthcare research.
