Alicante (29.09.23). The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL) has presented the 2022 Scientific Report within the framework of the Open Science – OPEN DAYS held on 28 and 29 September at Casa Mediterráneo, aimed at improving the social communication of science and engaging society in it. In 2022, ISABIAL researchers produced 586 scientific publications. Of these, 266 belonged to the first quartile, the highest impact category, and 75% of the total were published in Open Access.

The presentation of the 2022 Scientific Report was delivered this afternoon by former Scientific Director Dr. José Sánchez Payá and included the presence of the Regional Director for Research and Innovation, Mariola Penadés; the Territorial Director of the Regional Ministry of Health in Alicante, Begonia Comendador; the Managing Director of the Alicante–General Hospital Health Department, Francisco Soriano; and the Deputy Scientific Director of ISABIAL, Cristina Alenda.

Other members of the ISABIAL management team and the Alicante–General Hospital Health Department also attended the event, as well as the Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Alicante (UA), Juan Mora, and the Vice-Rector for Planning and Social Responsibility of Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), Domingo Orozco.

Regarding research initiatives, ISABIAL recorded a total of 283 studies during 2022, including clinical trials, observational studies and independent clinical research, as well as 276 active research projects.

During the event, the Regional Director for Research and Innovation, Mariola Penadés, highlighted the importance of both research and dissemination. She thanked the researchers “who include dissemination in their agenda” and added that “we conduct research because hope in health has a name. That name is research”.

For her part, ISABIAL’s Deputy Scientific Director, Cristina Alenda, stressed that “the social communication of science is no longer a matter of interest for a few; citizens increasingly demand more scientific, healthcare and biomedical information, and therefore it is our duty to ensure it”.

The presentation of the Scientific Report took place during an event featuring a performance by the pianist and ISABIAL researcher Francisco Cholbi and the Dr. Balmis General University Hospital Choir, with a large attendance of researchers.

Following this event, which also included a tribute to ISABIAL’s former Scientific Director, José Sánchez Payá, the activities “Meetings with researchers” and workshops aimed at the public were held. All activities were part of the SCIENCE GTS competitive project funded by the Horizon Europe Programme (MSCA and Citizens 2022) (ref. project 101061179), within the framework of the Mediterranean Researchers’ Night celebration.

Overall, ISABIAL has carried out two days full of science outreach activities at Casa Mediterráneo, including talks and workshops for schools and the general public, as well as a forum for patient groups. The objective has been to improve the social communication of science and encourage public participation.
