Alicante (24.04.2026).– The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL) has been part of the European JACARDI project (Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes) since 2025. The initiative aims to reduce the impact of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It brings together 21 countries and has a total budget of 53 million euros, allocated to 143 pilot projects across Europe.
As part of the project, ISABIAL received a visit from JACARDI representatives to share progress and strengthen the continuity of GARDEN, the pilot initiative led by ISABIAL in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the University of Alicante (UA). The project consists of a “serious game” — an educational mobile videogame that uses gamification to help people with diabetes interpret data from their glucose sensors and optimise decision‑making related to the self‑management of their condition.
This pilot project aims to empower patients and increase their self‑awareness regarding diabetes, thereby helping to reduce adverse events, hospital admissions and improve patients’ quality of life.
During the meeting, the team from ISABIAL’s Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases Research Group, together with the Technical Management team, presented an ambitious roadmap to ensure the sustainability and scalability of this tool beyond the European project, so that it can be made accessible to all eligible users of these systems beyond the Alicante – General Hospital Health Department.
The model’s validation in other national and international contexts is also envisaged, in collaboration with European partners, with the aim of confirming its applicability across different healthcare systems.
The meeting, which brought together international representatives of the project, was key to refining this strategy. The experts provided recommendations to strengthen the proposal’s viability and impact, helping to consolidate an innovative, scalable and sustainable long‑term solution.
With this type of initiative, ISABIAL reinforces its commitment to applied research and health innovation, promoting tools that place people with chronic diseases at the centre and contribute to transforming healthcare delivery.
