ISABIAL and Doctor Balmis Hospital update the approach to the most prevalent respiratory diseases

  • The 9th Update Conference on Respiratory Pathology has strengthened coordination between Primary and Hospital Care to improve patient care
  • Respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, respiratory failure and chronic cough have been the focus of the scientific program

Alicante (10.06.26). The Alicante Institute for Health and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL) and Doctor Balmis General University Hospital have hosted the 9th Update Conference on Respiratory Pathology, a meeting that brought together more than one hundred healthcare professionals to review the latest diagnostic and therapeutic developments in the most common respiratory diseases and strengthen coordination between the different levels of care.

The conference was organized by the Primary Care Directorate of the Alicante-General Hospital Health Department, the Pneumology Service and ISABIAL, under the slogan “If we work together, we all breathe better”.

The meeting brought together professionals from Primary Care, Pneumology and other specialties involved in respiratory patient care to share experiences, update protocols and move towards a comprehensive approach that ensures continuity of care.

The Medical Director of Primary Care, Belén Colás, has highlighted that “strengthening collaboration channels between Primary Care and Hospital Care allows us to offer a more effective and coordinated response to patients with respiratory problems, which constitute one of the main reasons for consultation in the healthcare system”.

Update on the most common respiratory diseases

The scientific program addressed clinically relevant issues such as the diagnostic and therapeutic management of acute respiratory infections, respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma and chronic cough. Likewise, topics such as the rational use of antibiotics, vaccination, home respiratory therapies, sleep-related breathing disorders and new therapeutic approaches in respiratory diseases were discussed.

The conference also included the participation of specialists from areas such as Preventive Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Hospital Pharmacy and Radiology, which made it possible to provide the multidisciplinary perspective that characterizes this training meeting.

One of the most highly valued aspects of the meeting was the practical approach of the sessions, designed to facilitate the application of the knowledge acquired in daily clinical practice. Attendees participated in workshops on spirometry in Primary Care, inhaler management, interpretation of chest radiology and home respiratory therapies, working with real clinical cases and common situations in professional practice.

The Head of the Pneumology Service, Dr. Luis Hernández, pointed out that “these conferences are part of a well-established continuing education program which, after nine editions, has become a benchmark for scientific updating and the improvement of care coordination in the field of respiratory diseases”.

The organizers have also highlighted their intention to continue promoting new training activities and collaborative research projects from Primary Care and Pneumology, under the umbrella of ISABIAL, as well as to develop monographic conferences on other areas of special interest.

With initiatives like this, the Alicante-General Hospital Health Department reaffirms its commitment to the continuous training of healthcare professionals and to improving the care of respiratory patients through teamwork, innovation and excellence in healthcare.

The event has been supported by AstraZeneca, Sanofi, GSK, Chiesi, Menarini, Linde, Gebro Pharma and Alter.
